[China Packaging News] recently, UPM announced that it plans to permanently reduce the annual production capacity of cultural paper in Europe by 305000 tons. Specifically, the production stops include the No. 3 machine of steyrerm ü HL paper mill in Austria and the No. 2 machine of composite sburg paper mill in Aug, Germany, which is not "paper plastic". The products are super calendered paper (SC paper)

UPM will increase the expenses of about 75million euros for this capacity reduction, of which 45million euros is the cash cost, but after the completion of the project, UPM will save 30million euros a year

according to the plan, other paper production lines in the two plants will not be affected and will continue to operate

Winfried schaur, executive vice president of UPM paper, said: "the demand for super calendered paper, like other cultural paper, has been declining in the past few years, and it is expected that the downward trend will also continue to be customized according to the specific conditions of users' LANs."

Anu Ahola, senior vice president of UPM Europe and North America (paper ENA) and retail department, explained that if there was no connection: "Due to the recession of the market, we have thoroughly analyzed the cost competitiveness of all cultural paper, taking into account the factors such as scale, technical age and saving potential. The two paper machines that are discontinued are the most uncompetitive super calendered paper production lines, and the reduction of production capacity will ensure that the remaining five super calendered paper production lines of UPM will be used more effectively."

earlier this year, UPM also sold the Schwedt factory. By the third quarter of 2017, 282000 tons of paper capacity will be permanently reduced. The new owner of the factory, leipa company, plans to switch to liner paper

since the end of 2014, UPM started to reduce the production capacity of cultural paper in Europe on a large scale. In the past two years, the cumulative production capacity of paper that has been announced to be discontinued is 627000 tons, the production capacity of super calendered paper is 540000 tons, and the production capacity of coated paper is 225000 tons, reaching a total of 1392000 tons
